It's a long story but you can power through it

Way back in December my neighbors son was getting married two days after Christmas. His bride had ordered a fake cake (they were serving cheesecakes) but it came smashed to pieces and there was no way that they were going to get a replacement in time. So they cancelled that cake and my neighbor was preparing to make a real wedding cake, which normally wouldn't be a problem for her since she can do anything, but at the time she was sicker than a dog.

I told them that I had a fake cake for my wedding and in fact we still had it and they could use it if they wanted to. So the bride, who I think no longer cared at that point, said go for it. Then my dear neighbor was going to make a small cake for them to cut at the reception at which point I told her that I would just do that. It wasn't a big deal, just a six inch cake with some scrolls on it, all in buttercream. Fairly simple. I'd post a picture but that button has chosen to no longer work today. Even though I already uploaded one to this post. Whatever.

Anyway, a few months later the grooms sister tells her friend whose brother is getting married (are you lost yet?) in April that I do wedding cakes. This couple just wants a small wedding cake to cut and then they were serving sheet cakes - oh so smart. A whole troupe of them came over on Valentine's day, decided what they wanted and I GOT HIRED TO MAKE A WEDDING CAKE.

In - Sane.

I've made a few wedding cakes before but just for family and never for profit. This is a first for me. It's white fondant with a design piped with a shell tip in buttercream and topped with fresh daffodils. I was actually pretty happy with how it turned out and the family was thrilled that it turned out, was there and they didn't have to worry about it. I don't know if the happy couple liked it or not since by the time I left they still hadn't made an appearance and the reception was starting in 40 minutes. Apparently they got married and then went back to their apartment.

I don't think they cared about the cake.

Anyway, here it is, my very first PAID wedding cake. Please don't turn me in to Cake Wrecks.

Oh I'm so glad you put this up. I have been wanting to see it so bad. It's amazing. And now I really want to eat cake!

Ummmmmmm.......I am AMAZED. It looks awesome. I never, I mean NEVER. Have made anything look remotely like that. My kids are lucky that I even frost their cakes with the store bought stuff. Way to go. It looks really good (and I can say that because I am an expert). I even blew it up to look at the details. Good Job!

This makes it official. You are totally wonderwoman. You sew, blog, make wedding cakes, run activity committees...seriously, is there anything WonderVal can't do?
The cake is awesome! Congratulations!

What a gorgeous cake. You are very talented and your kids & hubby too, are blessed to have you!
Love the pics of Ailie's little ponitails. Too cute!
Montana bound, huh? While there make sure you travel about 45 minutes south ( I think) to Hamilton/Corvallis area. Beautiful place and fresh clean air. Seriously it smells good there. LOL. I used to live there. I'd go back if Husby could make a good living there.........But...I don't want to be poor.
Loved the pics of kidlets at Easter.

I love the scroll design. What do you use for fondant? For Jillian's last birthday I used the boxed stuff. Even with almond extract added it still didn't taste that good. I just got a recipe for marshmallow fondant that I'm going to try.

Jessica, I use a premade product called Satin Ice that acutally tastes good. It comes in a ton of premixed colors and all you have to do is roll it out. Plus it has its own airtight container so it keeps for a year.

I've tried the MMF and it is a PAIN. If you can find the Satin Ice I'd use it every time. It's pricey but it's worth it.

its a great looking cake. If I ever marry again, I want to make sure its during daffodil season. Which can be pretty short so...I guess silk would do. But I am married now, and so won't likely marry again anytime soon, if ever. So why don't I just make a daffodil cake each year for the fun of celebrating that best flower ever? inspiring. Thankyou.
